LSCC Benefit Fund

A brief history

The LSCC Benefit Fund was established to promote programs at the Lexington Senior Citizens Center and to assist low-income Fayette County residents with the purchase of medications. The funds that support this program originated from the PGA Golf Classic that was held in Lexington from 1983-1993.

Mayor Scotty Baesler designated the proceeds from the Bank One Golf Tournament for the purpose of capital improvements to the Lexington Senior Citizens Center, built in 1983. On three occasions, these funds were used to enlarge or improve this facility. Building additions were added in 1986 and 1988.

The Senior Golf Tournament ended in 1993 and the remaining funds were held in an account until 1997. Mr. Sidney Gall contacted Mayor Pam Miller about the remaining funds, and in August 1996, the Mayor and Council approved the establishment of the LSCC Benefit Fund with the $135,000 remaining in the account.

A board of directors for the funds was assembled and began meeting in 1997. Articles of Incorporation and bylaws were drawn up, the fund was approved for a private non-profit status, 501 (C)(3) in May 1998, and the Benefit Fund was born.

The Directors of this group opted to leave the principle of these fund in a conservative growth account and to use the interest income from this fund for two purposes. Forty percent of the annual income is to be spent upgrades and program at the Senior Center that are currently covered by their budget. Sixty percent of these funds are designated for the Senior Emergency Medical Program (SEMP).
